Official: Court Rules Ronaldo and Juventus Share Equal Responsibility

Official sources confirm that the dispute over unpaid wages between Cristiano Ronaldo and Juventus has been resolved, with the latter being ordered to pay a portion of the outstanding salary.

The court partly supported Ronaldo's claims but also determined that both parties shared equal responsibility in this matter. Consequently, Juventus is required to compensate for approximately half of the salary Ronaldo sought in the lawsuit. According to Marco Guidi, a journalist from "Milan Sports Report," this loss in the lawsuit has imposed a significant financial burden on Juventus, as they had previously been confident in winning the case and had not budgeted for any potential expenses.

The disputed amount stems from what is referred to as the "second salary adjustment." During the COVID-19 pandemic, Juventus players, including Ronaldo, entered into an agreement with then-chairman Andrea Agnelli for a temporary salary adjustment, with a promise of reimbursement later. Ronaldo, being a key player, agreed to forego a portion of his wages to assist the club during challenging times.

Subsequently, after leaving Juventus, Ronaldo began appealing to the arbitration commission, demanding €19.5 million in unpaid wages, based on the "second salary adjustment" agreement he had with the club.

The court ruling is as follows:

1. Based on the "extremely categorical" request made by Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro and the reasons stated in the pleadings, determining the defendant's prior obligations, considering the contributory negligence of the plaintiff, Juventus Football Club S.p.A. is ordered to pay €9,774,166.66 to Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, along with statutory interest on the outstanding balance from the due date and the yearly balance of revaluation.

2. In addition to the costs already settled by the Arbitration Commission during the lawsuit, both parties are mutually liable for the full reimbursement of legal expenses, with each party bearing 50% of the costs. The majority decision to this effect was made by the arbitrators during individual meetings held in Milan on February 15, February 22, March 7, and April 10, 2024. Only arbitrator Professor Roberto Saki dissented from the decision.
